Great Britain Maps for Smartphones and
Tablets |
When
the
Ordnance Survey
released its Opendata product in 2010 it was a great advance but still
lacking in quality compared to Landranger and Explorer products. I have
merged this data with OS contour data and footpath data from Open
Street Map together with Rights of Way data from most Local Authorities
in England and Wales (the law is different in Scotland) to make a
product specifically designed for loading into
Smartphone applications. The digital map is copied to the device and
used offline with no data charges. There is no limit to the number of
devices on which you can use it. You are also free to print or
publish from this mapping with the requirement that you include the
messages at the base of this page and that this requirement be also
passed on. These maps are very good value
: Landranger maps are, typically, four times the price from a
company such as Memory-map. The mapping covers the whole of Great Britain - Northern Ireland is not covered by the Ordnance Survey. It is broken down into seven overlapping sections to keep each file less than 2GB. The files can be immediately used with Locus, RMAPS, Maverick and Back Country Navigator apps on Android and with Galileo GPS on iPhones and iPads. Free software - Mobile Atlas Creator available for Windows, Linux and MACs - will convert the data into a range of other formats for applications on Android, iOS (Apple), Symbian, Garmin and Magellan (see here how to do this). MAPC2MAPC will allow you to view these maps (Utilities>View SQLITEDB map) and load, draw, edit and save GPX Tracks and Routes. These maps are also available by subscription with the MyTrails Android app. These maps are available for sale only to the UK and to countries outside the EU. With these maps and applications you will (except in deep woods and gorges) be able to see where you are, where you have been and plot where you are going. Read here why hiker, bikers, geocachers and others should consider a Smartphone instead of a GPS unit. Please click here to download a sample and full details or Email if you have any queries. Click here for a comparison with OS Landranger and Explorer maps. Known rights of way are in green, other paths in red. (On the real smartphone the image is sharp!) Sections are South (Kent to Cornwall south of the M4), Wales, Midlands (England M4 to Sheffield), North (Sheffield to the Tyne), Lowlands (Tyne to the Tay), Highlands (Scottish Mainland north of the Tay), Islands (Hebrides, Orkney, Shetland). Click here to buy. Please download the sample first and check that it meets your requirements. |
